Midsouthern Restorations

1966 Mustang

1966 Mustang fastback came out of Kentucky for a full restoration. The owners are Mustang owners of other years and this one was added. It was in a barn when they found it and it appeared to have been sitting for a few years at least. The car looked solid but once disassembly started the past came back to life. There were county road signs covering the rust holes in floor. The trunk and rear quarter panels revealed rot and the fresh air pipes which is a very common problem on mustangs were rotted. The original 289 was there but ugly. The drive train was pulled and once car was totally tore down it was sandblasted to remove the multiple layers of paint. The 289 was rebuilt and horse power added with a hotter cam and new intake and rebuilt carburetor. The transmission was rebuilt as well has all brakes and suspension. The car was rolled on a body rack and all rust was repaired. We cut out all rot and replace with new metal. The car was in an accident somewhere in the far past and had to be straighten’d out so front end was correct again like new. The body was smoothed out through many hours of body work.

Once the body was sweet it is time to lay one the factory color of Candy Apple Red. The body was wet sanded and polished and now it is time for reassembly. The motor was rebuilt balanced and test ran on our test stand. An electronic distributor was added and some vintage aluminum valve covers were found and polished. A matching air cleaner was purchased. The brakes were upgraded with dual master cylinder for safety sake. All the brakes were rebuilt leaving them all stock just like they come from the factory. The car stops well just like it did from the factory. The non power steering was rebuilt. The owner wanted the car brakes and steering left has it came the from factory.

The 289’s power is excitable to drive and car runs out great. The owner picked his wheels and go very well with old car theme.
